From the 13th century onwards, it was common to refer to present-day Thailand as "Siam". Four important kingdoms emerged in this part of the world: Sukhothai, Lanna, Ayutthaya, and Rattanakosin. These kingdoms were predominantly Theravada Buddhist, inheriting, conserving and following the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, and their societies were culturally attuned to Buddhist development. Over the six centuries, the people of Thailand have not only learned from other traditions but have also recognised the value of their own traditions and innovated. It was the only country in Southeast Asia that was not colonised by the West in the 19th century.
